This week on The Infinite Mind we strive to understand Empathy. More than just caring, empathy is a complex neurological mechanism that holds society together. We’ll learn about what goes on in our brains when we tune into each other’s emotions, and what it means if we can’t. Dr. Peter Kramer is our host. We’ll talk to world renown biologist, Frans De Waal, about the evolution of empathy. Neurobiologist Read Montague, will explain how new brain science has proven we are hard-wired to connect with each others emotions. We’ll visit the Canadian school program, Roots of Empathy, that tries to foster empathy in children, and a Tufts University program that coaches prospective doctors in bedside manner. We’ll talk with Anna and Paul Ornstein, two psychiatrists and Holocaust survivors who were pioneers in a therapy movement that aims to heal through empathy. We feature a live performance from Joe Wong, a Chinese comedian who introduces American audiences to the perils of beings an immigrant. With commentary from John Hockenberry.
